Demand Generation is Dead

I received a marketing email recently from a salesforce ecosystem partner called Marketo.  It was for their new "Demand Generation Success Kit".  I was stunned by how wrong and how backwards the concept of Demand Generation is. Good businesses solve real problems with valuable products and they do it over time by establishing real relationships.  Demand generation has nothing to do with it.  There is a LOT of demand in the world.  The objective of a business is to meet that demand and to execute and to perform over time.  Without a focus on products and services that provide  solutions to real problems our economy is just a shell game and when we have economic downturns, we blame the consumer for not playing their role which is buying stuff or respond to the corporate "demand generation". If we had a paradigm where corporations were responsible for providing valuable products then a slow economy would tell us that corporataions are not providing valuable products.
